Do pergolas really provide shade?

Updated: Aug 6

Pergolas can provide shade, but the amount & effectiveness of the shade depend on a few factors, including pergola type, time of day, and any supplemental coverings.

Some factors that influence the shade pergolas offer:

Design and Structure:

  • The spacing and orientation of the beams or rafters affect how much sunlight filters through. Tighter spacing, bigger slats, or angled slats can create more shade.

  • The position of the pergola relative to the sun’s path also influences the amount of shade. A pergola can be strategically positioned to block sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.

  • A larger pergola can more easily provide the shade you need.

Adjustable Features:

  • Some modern pergolas have adjustable louvers or retractable roofs that can be opened or closed to control the amount of sunlight and shade. Many of these can offer both complete shade and a lot of sunlight, with a quick adjustment. See more photos here.

Vegetation:

  • Climbing plants like wisteria, grapevines, or ivy can be trained to grow over a pergola, providing natural shade and cooling.

Additional Coverings:

  • Pergolas can be fitted with fabric covers, retractable canopies, or shade sails to enhance the amount of shade they provide.

  • You could add things like bamboo or reed mats on top for extra coverage.

  • It may be easier and more cost effective in the long run to opt for an adjustable pergola if you really want the complete shade option.

How do pergolas provide complete shade?

While traditional pergolas may not completely block out the sun like a solid roof would, they can significantly reduce direct sunlight and create a more comfortable outdoor space. *If you want a pergola that can entirely provide shade, consider a louvered pergola.
